In commemoration of World Sickle Cell Day 2026, the Kogi State Government has approved free health insurance coverage for persons living with sickle cell disease, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive healthcare and social protection.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo announced the initiative as part of efforts to reduce the financial burden of managing sickle cell disorder and improve access to quality, long-term care for affected individuals across the state.
The programme is expected to provide beneficiaries with access to essential healthcare services including routine check-ups, emergency treatment, and ongoing medical support under the state’s health insurance scheme.
Health stakeholders have described the move as a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s response to sickle cell disease, which remains a major public health challenge in the country with one of the highest global burdens.
The initiative also aligns with broader national and global calls for equitable healthcare access, early diagnosis, and improved management of genetic blood disorders.
Speaking on the development, state health officials noted that the policy will help reduce avoidable complications, hospital admissions, and out-of-pocket expenditure for families affected by the condition.
Sickle cell advocates have welcomed the announcement, urging other states to adopt similar health insurance interventions to support vulnerable patients and improve survival outcomes.
World Sickle Cell Day is observed annually on June 19 to raise awareness about the condition and promote better care, research, and policy support worldwide.
