Nutritional Seeds: Another Pathway to Lasting Health – 10

By Deborah Bamisaye

Every meal has its heroes: The rice fills you; the chicken satisfies you; the drink refreshes you, but there is one quiet guest that arrives after everyone else has finished.

It asks for no plate; it needs no spoon; it simply gets to work – comforting the stomach; helping your body breathe a sigh of relief after a hearty meal; and freshening the breath.

The Guest That Never Eats… Yet Always Cleans Up After the Meal

After exploring the nutritional benefits of pomegranate seeds in our previous edition, we continue our journey into nature’s tiny guest that has been serving dinner tables for centuries. Yes! centuries.

What’s its name?

Fennel

It’s tiny, fragrant, easy to overlook yet remarkably unique. These little greenish seeds have earned the respect of chefs, herbalists and scientists alike.

Unlike some of the foods we’ve explored in recent editions, fennel is truly a nutritional seed. It comes from the fennel plant (Foeniculum vulgare) and has long been prized not only for its pleasant aroma but also for its impressive nutritional and medicinal value.

So, what makes fennel so special?

For starters, it is naturally rich in dietary fibre, potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron. It also contains vitamin C and several beneficial plant compounds that help nourish the body. One of those compounds is anethole, the natural oil responsible for fennel’s distinctive sweet aroma.

Scientists have studied anethole for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while other research suggests that fennel may help support healthy digestion, reduce bloating, ease excess gas and contribute to a healthy gut. It has also been associated with supporting heart health and protecting the body’s cells from everyday oxidative stress.

No wonder many cultures have made fennel the final guest at the dining table.

Can You Find Fennel in Nigeria?

Certainly! Although it may not be as common as egusi or sesame, fennel seeds are available in many supermarkets, spice shops, health-food stores and online marketplaces in Nigeria. Some stores sell them whole, while others offer them as herbal tea or ground spice.

How Can You Enjoy Fennel?

The beauty of fennel is its simplicity.

  • Chew a teaspoon after meals for fresher breath and digestive comfort.
  • Steep the seeds in hot water to prepare a soothing herbal tea.
  • Add them to soups, fish, vegetables, bread and other dishes for a pleasant aroma and flavour.
  • A gentle crush before brewing or cooking helps release more of its natural oils.
  • Personally, I also enjoy adding fennel seeds to rice while it cooks. The difference is always clear. The aroma becomes richer, the flavour more refreshing, and every spoonful carries the quiet goodness of this remarkable seed. If you’ve never tried it, you may be pleasantly surprised.

One word of caution: ‘Fennel is a wonderful addition to a healthy lifestyle, but it is not a substitute for medical care. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or managing a medical condition, speak with your healthcare professional before using it regularly as a herbal remedy.’

Perhaps the greatest lesson fennel teaches is not hidden in its flavor; it is hidden in its size.

Some of life’s greatest gifts do not arrive with noise or glamour. They arrive quietly… waiting for someone curious enough to notice them.

So, the next time you walk through a supermarket, browse a spice shop or scroll through an online store, don’t overlook this tiny seed. Bring it home; brew it; chew it after a meal. Or add it to your next pot of rice and experience the beautiful difference for yourself.

Share it with someone you care about because lasting health is rarely built by one extraordinary decision. It is built by many ordinary choices, repeated faithfully.

Health does not always arrive wearing a white coat or carrying a prescription. Sometimes, it comes disguised as a tiny seed resting quietly on a supermarket shelf or waiting patiently in a spice jar.

Your body is listening to every small choice you make today, and tomorrow will faithfully tell the story.

Until next time, keep discovering the extraordinary power hidden in ordinary foods – one nutritional seed at a time.
