Every day, pharmacists do more than dispense medicines. They help patients understand how to use their medications, provide guidance on safe medicine use, support prevention and contribute to improving access to healthcare. Yet as healthcare needs continue to change, the role of pharmacists is also evolving.
This is the focus of World Pharmacists Day 2026, celebrated today, September 25, under the theme “Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures.” The theme was announced by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), which leads the global World Pharmacists Day campaign. According to FIP, empowering pharmacists means giving them the skills, recognition and supportive systems needed to contribute fully to healthcare.
Why is World Pharmacists Day celebrated?
World Pharmacists Day is observed every September 25 to recognise the contribution of pharmacists and the wider pharmacy profession to healthcare.
The date marks the anniversary of the founding of the International Pharmaceutical Federation in 1912. The World Pharmacists Day campaign was adopted by FIP in 2009 and has been coordinated annually since 2010.
The day provides an opportunity to recognize pharmacists while also drawing attention to the role they can play in addressing changing health needs.

What does “empowering pharmacists” mean?
The 2026 theme goes beyond simply celebrating pharmacists. FIP says pharmacists need appropriate education, recognition, supportive legislation, sustainable funding and integration into health systems to practise to the full extent of their expertise.
This is increasingly important as healthcare faces challenges including ageing populations, noncommunicable diseases, digital transformation and changing healthcare needs. When pharmacists are properly supported, their expertise can contribute to several areas of healthcare.
1. Improving access to healthcare
Pharmacists are often among the most accessible healthcare professionals in communities. Their role can include providing medicine-related advice, supporting self-care and helping patients understand when they may need further medical attention.
Expanding the contribution of pharmacists can therefore help make some aspects of healthcare more accessible to patients.
2. Promoting safer use of medicines
Taking a medicine correctly is just as important as having access to it. Pharmacists help patients understand how medicines should be taken, possible interactions and other important information related to their treatment. Their expertise can help reduce medication-related problems and support better use of medicines.
3. Supporting disease prevention
The role of pharmacists increasingly extends beyond dispensing medicines. FIP has highlighted pharmacy’s potential contribution to prevention and care, including areas such as vaccination and self-care. This means pharmacists can be important partners in helping communities prevent illness and make informed health decisions.
4. Adapting to a changing healthcare system
Healthcare is changing rapidly. Digital technology, new medicines, changing disease patterns and increasing healthcare demands are creating new responsibilities and opportunities for pharmacy professionals.
For pharmacists to respond effectively, they need continuing education and the opportunity to develop the competencies required by modern healthcare.
The conversation around empowering pharmacists ultimately goes beyond the profession itself. Patients benefit when healthcare professionals have the knowledge, resources and systems needed to provide quality care.
FIP’s 2026 campaign therefore calls on governments, policymakers, regulators, health insurers and the public to help create environments where pharmacists can make full use of their expertise.
Empowering pharmacists is, in this sense, part of strengthening healthcare for everyone. World Pharmacists Day is not only about saying thank you to pharmacists. It is also an opportunity to recognize how much the profession contributes to healthcare and to consider how pharmacists can be better supported as health needs evolve
From helping patients use medicines safely to supporting prevention, access to care and stronger health systems, pharmacists remain an important part of the healthcare workforce.
This year’s message is therefore clear a healthier future requires pharmacists to have the support and opportunities needed to contribute fully to patient care.
As the world marks World Pharmacists Day 2026, it is a fitting time to recognize the professionals working behind the medicines patients rely on every day.
