Nigeria and Egypt are exploring closer cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking following talks between the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Egyptian Embassy in Abuja. The discussions took place during a courtesy visit by Egypt’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohammed Fouad, to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), at the agency’s national headquarters.
At the meeting, both sides highlighted the importance of strengthening anti-drug security ties as criminal networks continue to exploit international borders to traffic illicit substances. Areas identified for closer collaboration include intelligence sharing, capacity building, institutional cooperation, and the exchange of best practices aimed at disrupting the activities of drug traffickers.
Ambassador Fouad described Nigeria as an important regional partner and expressed Egypt’s readiness to work more closely with the NDLEA in addressing the growing threat posed by illicit drugs. He noted that stronger cooperation between African countries is essential to tackling organised drug trafficking, which increasingly operates across national boundaries.
Marwa welcomed the proposal, stressing that no country can effectively combat drug trafficking alone. According to him, sustained partnerships with neighbouring countries and international allies are critical to strengthening enforcement efforts, improving intelligence gathering, and limiting the movement of illegal drugs across the continent.
While the discussions focused primarily on security cooperation, the implications extend beyond law enforcement. The illicit drug trade continues to fuel substance abuse, addiction, mental health disorders, violence, and other social challenges that place a significant burden on healthcare systems and communities.
The meeting reflects growing recognition that addressing the drug problem requires coordinated action among countries facing similar challenges. By strengthening security cooperation and sharing expertise, Nigeria and Egypt hope to improve their collective response to transnational drug trafficking while supporting broader efforts to protect public health and public safety.
The renewed engagement also aligns with the NDLEA’s ongoing efforts to build strategic partnerships that enhance its operational capacity and contribute to a more coordinated regional response against illicit drug trafficking.
