The World Health Organization (WHO) is backing efforts to expand birth control options for men, as researchers work on new male contraceptive methods that could give men more choices beyond condoms, withdrawal and vasectomy. The development is part of new WHO guidance on expanding contraceptive options, published on September 23, 2026.
What WHO Says About Male Birth Control
WHO says several hormonal and non-hormonal male contraceptives are currently being researched, with some promising candidates already in advanced clinical trials. According to the organisation, new reversible male contraceptives could potentially reach the market within the next five to 10 years.
The WHO has also developed its first Target Product Profile for male contraceptive methods. It outlines characteristics future products should aim to meet, including safety, effectiveness, acceptability and affordability. The aim is to give researchers and developers clearer direction when developing new birth control options for men.
The move comes as WHO highlights the demand for greater contraceptive choice. Around 30% of couples currently rely on a male contraceptive method, despite men having relatively few options. WHO also reports that more than 75% of couples surveyed said they would be willing to use a new male contraceptive, while more than 85% of women surveyed said they would trust their male partners to take responsibility for contraception.
The new guidance also expands recommendations for some existing contraceptive methods, including longer use of combined oral contraceptive pills and contraceptive implants for up to five years. WHO says the broader goal is to give people more evidence-based contraceptive choices.
For now, the new male contraceptive methods remain under research and are not yet widely available. Their safety, effectiveness and regulatory approval will determine when and where they can be introduced.
