Kano State has taken a significant step towards improving its public health emergency response with the inauguration of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC). The new centre, situated within the Infectious Disease Hospital in Kano is expected to serve as the coordination point for monitoring disease trends, investigating outbreaks and supporting emergency response activities.
Health authorities say the facility will enhance collaboration among surveillance officers, laboratories and healthcare institutions to ensure that suspected outbreaks are detected and contained promptly.
Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the establishment of the centre reflects the state’s commitment to building a stronger and more resilient healthcare system. He noted that timely disease detection and coordinated response are essential to protecting communities from public health emergencies, particularly as infectious diseases continue to pose challenges across the country.
According to the governor, the facility will support efforts to tackle communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, meningitis and other epidemic-prone illnesses through improved surveillance, data management and rapid response mechanisms. He added that strengthening public health infrastructure remains a priority for the state government as it works to improve healthcare delivery.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, described the centre as a major milestone in Kano’s disease prevention strategy. He said the institution would provide a structured approach to disease monitoring, allowing health officials to identify unusual health events early and coordinate interventions before they escalate into larger outbreaks.
He explained that effective surveillance extends beyond collecting health data, noting that it also involves analysing information, sharing findings promptly and deploying response teams where necessary. According to him, these measures are critical to limiting the spread of infectious diseases and reducing their impact on affected communities.
