Magnesium:Uncovering the Hype around the Mineral Hiding in Plain Sight – 1

By Deborah Bamisaye

11:47 p.m. inside the body’s central control room, everything was running.
The Heart Monitor blinked steadily.
The Nerve Network flashed with messages.
The Muscles responded to commands.
The Energy Console hummed quietly in the background.

Then – BEEP! One light turned amber.

The Brain looked up – “What’s that?”

Nobody answered. BEEP! BEEP!!

Another warning light came on.

The Brain stood. “What’s happening?”

The Heart Monitor answered first.

“My rhythm depends on a carefully controlled system. Something isn’t right.”

The Muscles spoke next. “Some of my processes aren’t running as smoothly as they should.”

The Nerve Network flickered. “And I’m involved in normal nerve function too. Something is missing.”

The Brain stared at the control panel: “Fine. What are we missing?” The system began scanning.

Potassium – present,

Calcium – present,

Iron – present.

The Brain exhaled. “Then what is causing all this?”

Suddenly, the entire control room went dark. For three seconds, there was absolute silence. Then a small green light appeared at the far end of the room. A figure stepped into its glow.

Nobody had summoned it.
Nobody had even noticed it was there. It walked toward the control panel. The Brain stared. “Who are you?” The figure stopped – “Magnesium.”

The Brain blinked; “Magnesium?”

“Yes.”

“You’ve been here this whole time?”

Magnesium looked around the control room – “More often than you realise.”

It placed a hand on the energy console.

“I help hundreds of biochemical reactions in the body. I’m involved in normal muscle and nerve function, and I play a role in how cells produce and use energy.”

The Brain looked at the warning lights.

“So you’re saying all this depends on you?”

Magnesium shook its head. “No.” (A pause) “I’m saying the body doesn’t run on one hero.” It looked around the room. “It runs on a team.”

The lights slowly began coming back on – one by one. The Heart Monitor steadied.
The Nerve Network brightened.
The Energy Console hummed again.

The Brain stared at Magnesium. “Then why didn’t we notice you before?”

Magnesium smiled. “Because the people you notice most aren’t always the people doing the quietest work.”

The Brain turned back to the control panel, then froze. A new message had appeared on the screen – ‘MAGNESIUM STATUS: INSUFFICIENT.’

The Brain’s expression changed. “Wait…” (It looked at Magnesium.) “If the system has been warning us…then how long have we been ignoring the warning?” (The control room fell silent.)

And suddenly, Magnesium’s arrival wasn’t the story – the warning was.

Meet Magnesium

Magnesium does not enjoy the celebrity status of vitamin C. It doesn’t have the bone-building reputation of calcium.

It doesn’t get as much attention as iron.

And nobody seems to wake up in the morning shouting, “Omo, I need my magnesium!” Yet inside the body, magnesium is involved in more than 300 enzyme systems, chemical processes involved in energy production, protein formation, nerve and muscle function, blood glucose regulation, bone health and more. It also works closely with calcium and potassium in processes important for nerve impulses, muscle contraction and normal heart rhythm. So perhaps magnesium deserves a little more respect – because this is not a mineral with one small assignment.

It has a long job description. And perhaps that is where the real story begins because magnesium has suddenly become the mineral everyone seems to be talking about.

  • Magnesium for sleep.
  • Magnesium for muscles.
  • Magnesium for stress.
  • Magnesium for energy.
  • Magnesium for this.
  • Magnesium for that.

But where does the science end and the hype begin? Is magnesium truly the quiet powerhouse its growing reputation suggests? Those are the questions worth asking because magnesium deserves neither blind worship nor careless dismissal. It deserves something much better – a closer look.

But here is the part that fascinates me…Your body contains only a relatively small amount of magnesium, roughly 25 grams in an adult. Yet about 50–60% of it is stored in the bones, with much of the remainder in soft tissues. Only a tiny fraction circulates in the blood. Think about that for some seconds. The blood, the very place where we often look when checking what is happening inside the body, contains only a small portion of your total magnesium. Which means magnesium is not simply sitting in your bloodstream waiting to be counted. It is distributed throughout the body’s machinery and that makes its story rather interesting.

But here is where magnesium’s story needs a little nuance:

Being important to the body does not mean being responsible for every complaint the body makes.

When the body starts running short…

This is where we need to be very careful. You see, the internet has made magnesium sound like the answer to almost everything. Can’t sleep? Magnesium – Muscle cramp? Magnesium – Tired? Oh! It’s because you are low on Magnesium – Headache? Magnesium – Stressed? Magnesium. Before long, magnesium has become the nutritional version of: “Have you tried switching it off and on again?” But the human body is not a phone. We will be considering demystifying this together.

Let’s uncover more in the next edition. See you then!
