WHO Urges Nigeria, Others to Prioritize Mental HealthThe World Health Organisation (WHO) has called on Nigeria and other countries to prioritize mental health.
Director, WHO Regional Office for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti made the call in her statement to mark this year’s World Health Day. The theme this year is “Depression, let’s talk’.
WHO defines depression as an illness characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest and inability to perform daily activities for a period of over two weeks. It is associated with feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, tiredness and poor concentration.
Moeti urged countries to support mental health programmes by allocating adequate human and financial resources to it.
She appealed to member states to include mental health in their health development agenda, adding that governments, partners and civil society can work together to bring depression out of the shadows in the
