In the first four weeks of like, a child’s risk of death is nearly 15 times greater than any other time before their first birthday, according to the World Health Organisation.
At least four out of every 10 deaths among children aged under five are among children in their first 28 days of life.
Babies with hypothermia have a doubled risk of dying, compared to others. Neonatal hypothermia is a leading contributor to these deaths. It prompts support for kangaroo care, holding a newborn to the chest to keep warm.
But a bracelet on your baby’s wrist that continuously monitors temperature and alerts when the baby is not warm enough is some help.
The bracelet flashes a blue light when your baby is at a normal temperature; it flashes an orange light with a beep to alert you when your baby’s temperature falls below normal. That is signal for kangaroo care. Once your baby warms up, the bracelet flashes a blue light once more. You can continue the kangaroo mother care to prevent future alarms.
Its makers say it empowers the caregiver to warm the baby with kangaroo care well before hypoxia—that’s when regions of the body become starved of adequate oxygen supply.
Studies show the bracelet is accurate in early detection of hypothermia, encourages kangaroo care, weight gain and positive health-seeking behaviour, according to its maker Bempu.
Hypothermia is a symptom of infection and catching it early could also help catch several cases of infections in the home.
Introduced on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly in Geneva, the bracelet is already figured in the 2018 budgets of seven Indian states, said Bempu founder Ratul Narain.
And then there is the balloon that stops bleeding after childbirth, a leading cause of morbidity among women. At least 10 million women suffer uncontrolled bleeding and more than 110,000 are at risk of death. It is said the World Health Organisation recommends the uterine balloon tamponade (UBT) as a life-saving device to treat post-partum haemorrhage.
One in 10 women bleed after childbirth due to injury to the uterus. In the other nine women, it is because the uterus fails to contract. The contraction is needed to close the bleeding vessels.
The Ellavi UBT is a pre-assembled pressure-based device with a free flow system. It consists of a balloon, a tube, a stopcock valve and a reservoir bag. The balloon is inserted into the uterus, and water poured into the bag.
Water flows by gravity through the tube to inflate the balloon just enough to fill the uterine space. As the uterus begins to contract on its own, it pushes the water back out into the bag.
Health care workers in low-resource have used makeshift devices—condoms and surgical gloves—to try and stop bleeding. The UBT, made by the Sinapi has undergone trial in four South African hospitals and researchers found no complications occurred.
