HERBS FOR STRESS         by Morgan Nwanguma

Some group of herbs have been known to handle stress by elevating the body’s ability to cope with the day to day bombardments thereby making it possible for it to adapt to these pressures so that untold destruction is not wreaked on the body’s immune system. This group of herbs are known as adaptogens; they are nature’s miracle anti-stress and fatigue fighters. These herbs practically take care of your stress levels by fortifying your body and equipping it to deal with the impact of stressors.

Experts say that stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or suspense; stress also comes along with it a breakdown of your immune system and so you really need to fortify your immunity. According to Don Colbert, M.D., a renowned expert and author on family practice, and nutritional therapies, you need to “take a green food daily to help cleanse your body and boost your immune system”. But aside this, there are other specific herbs experts say are very good stress destroyers you can choose from.

A list of these herbs of which can readily be found in measured capsules, tablets and gels, is inclusive of – Ginseng (Korean or Asian ginseng, Siberian ginseng and American ginseng). Ginseng being the king of adaptogens, comes in all these afore-mentioned varieties. Others are Rhodiola, Ashwagandha, Schizandra, Astragalus, Licorice root, Holy basil, and some mushroom species also referred to as Cordyceps. They are useful in their high potential ability to lower blood pressure and sugar levels, thereby stopping stress from draining your adrenal gland’s ability to supply vitamin C.

Adaptogens generally react to your stressors’ effect on you while trying to normalise your physiological functions. These are plants and herbs that have phytotherapeutic effects on the body. That is, they administer healing to the body by the effect of plant nutrients. Other effective herbs that are popular as natural stress remedies include Passionflower herb, Lemon balm, and Kava root.

The Asian (Ginseng) is the most powerful of the ginseng species, and even of all known adaptogens. Also known as (panax) ginseng, this red ginseng has the ability to improve mental performance and the body’s ability to withstand stress. It is a strong antioxidant and anti-depressant.

It is important to note that both your physical and mental structures can be adversely affected by chronic stress; adaptogens are therefore able to maintain equilibrium and refurbish the body. And, you can increase your ability to handle issues of stress and improve your mental and physical performance with the use of these unique natural herbs called adaptogens.

Adaptogens will aid your fight against heat stress, oxidative stress, and even fatigue. They will also work for you in tackling the effects of radiation and exposure to toxicity, as well as improve your oxygen intake. But always remember to boost your immunity whenever or not you are ‘down’, for Dr. Don Colbert says, all high chlorophyll foods are just too essential for you to combat stress as they are great immune boosters.

  • […] Stress is primarily a physical response. When stressed, the body thinks it is under attack and switches to ‘fight or flight’ mode, releasing a complex mix of hormones and chemicals such as adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine to prepare the body for physical action. This causes a number of reactions, from blood being diverted to muscles, to shutting down unnecessary bodily functions such as digestion. […]
