Group Wants Teenage Pregnancy Checked in Nigeria

Group Wants Teenage Pregnancy Checked in Nigeria A Non-Governmental Organisation, known as the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, has called on government at all levels and private institutions reduce the rate of teenage pregnancy in the country by enhancing the living condition of girls.
The Country Programme Director of AHF Nigeria, Dr. Echey Ijezie, made this call during this year’s celebration of the International Day of the Girl held on Tuesday in Calabar.
Describing the rate of teenage pregnancy in Nigeria as high, Ijezie urged government at the Federal and state levels, as well as private institutions to create a conducive environment for girls to live in an atmosphere where their rights would be of paramount importance.
The AHF Nigeria programme director regretted that the high rate of teenage pregnancy was having a negative effect on the country because, according to him, “girls who should be in school have had to abandon their education as a result of pregnancies.”
While appealing to government to equip primary and post primary schools with functional toilets, Ijezie noted that the absence of toilets in many schools had contributed to endangering the health of girls in the country.
