The Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, has inaugurated the basic Health Care Provision fund in Apumiri area of Umuahia in Abia State. Adewole, who also inaugurated the Abia Electronic Hospital Information Management System at the Abia Specialist Hospital, Amachara, charged other state governors to show interest in the basic health care programme.
The two projects were funded by the Federal Government through the allocation of N55bn in conjunction with the Abia State Government and support from the World Bank to give free medical care to pregnant women and other Abia residents.
The minister described the projects as people-oriented, saying they would reinvigorate the Nigerian health care system. According to Adewole, the basic health care facility will have a bank account which will attract about N1bn in the next one month from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The money, he said, would be channeled to the 332 health care centres across the state
