  The Joint Health Sector Unions has urged the Senate to amend the proposed MDCN Act, 2020, saying the bill will further cause division in the country’s health sector. JOHESU president, Comrade Biobelemoye Josiah, at the public hearing of the MDCN Act, 2020, by the senate committee on health reminded the committee of the existing rules of the National Assembly not to consider legislating on matters before the court. “We draw the attention of the senate committee on health to the fact that the issue of the regulatory agency which has powers to regulate and control clinical/medical laboratory practice in the field of pathology is an ongoing suit at the Court of Appeal. For the records, the NICN in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/284/2014 had ruled that MLSCN has such powers in Nigeria.

Cervical cancer: WHO partners NPHCDA to introduce HPV vaccine in Nigeria

  World Health Organisation Country Representative to Nigeria, Walter Mulombo, says the organisation is working with National Primary Health Care Development Agency to introduce Human papillomavirus vaccine into Expanded Programme on Immunisation schedule. The information is in Mulombo’s message to mark the World Cancer Day on Thursday in Abuja. World Cancer Day is an international day marked on Feb. 4 to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. According to him, HPV vaccine is key to preventing cervical cancer, noting that so far, 17 African countries have introduced HPV vaccination nationwide. He said some countries were achieving high national HPV vaccine coverage with the commitment of their governments and partners.
