Anti-evolvability Drugs could slow Antibiotic Resistance in Bacteria

The failure of existing antibiotics to combat infections is a major health threat worldwide. While the traditional strategy for tackling drug resistance has been to develop new antibiotics, a more sustainable long-term approach may be preventing bacteria from evolving it in the first place. Until now, one major hurdle to this approach is that it has not been clear how antibiotics induce new mutations. In a study published in April 1, 2019 in the journal Molecular Cell, researchers found that one mechanism by which antibiotics induce drug-resistance mutations in bacteria is by triggering the generation of high levels of toxic molecules called reactive oxygen species (ROS). WHO Issues Guidelines to Prevent Dementia

The number of people with dementia worldwide is expected to triple in the next 30 years, according to the World Health Organisation. The organisation disclosed this in a statement announcing new guidelines to tackle the ailment, on its website on Tuesday. “We need to do everything we can to reduce our risk of dementia,” the statement quoted the WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, as saying. “The scientific evidence gathered for these guidelines confirm what we have suspected for some time, that what is good for our heart, is also good for our brain.” According to the guidelines, people can reduce their risk of dementia by getting regular exercise, not smoking and avoiding harmful use of alcohol. The Nigeria Orthodontists Association has called on the Federal Government to invest more in the training of orthodontists to check the dearth of professionals in the specialty.
